VERONA’S HISTORY IN GENSAN
ROMEO & JULIET HALF MARATHON MEDAL
They represent the hidden heart of Verona, there, where they are, a few steps from “Piazza delle Erbe” and from “Piazza dei Signori”, where it is standing a brooding Dante, who stayed in Verona by Cangrande Della Scala … near, yes, yet hidden, close but hidden at a first glance: there are the Scaligeri tombs, the mausoleum of Della Scala Lords, an example of Gothic architecture, “one of the most distinguished and significant”, called it the medievalist Georges Duby, a famous symbol of the city of Verona.
Veronese lordship private chapel, the small church of “Santa Maria Antica” welcomed in his small yard, in the second half of 1200, the Scala Lords in red marble sarcophagi. Enclosing this precious place, an amazing wrought iron gate, composed by rings around the heraldic symbol of the scale, supported by marble columns topped by statues.
The scale symbol, the four pegs, the “original one”, the one wanted by Cangrande, the one that was taken as symbol of Hellas Verona football team, the one that thousands of Veronese people wear or carry tattooed on their bodies … is the scala surrounded by rings, the one that was the inspiration of the GENSAN Giulietta & Romeo Half Marathon 2017 medal. Following Veronamarathon organization tradition, this medal represents a unique corner of the city, a monument that always had the power to bring together all the Veronese around its old town, its history and its ancient culture.
And so the scaligeri tombs become, in GENSAN Giulietta & Romeo Half Marathon 2017 medal, the symbol of Verona, a city that has its roots in the pre Roman history and keep in its narrow streets, in its monuments all the vitality of the place where just between the end of 1200 and the first half of 1300 was the stage of one of its greatest and glorious moments.
